Photography by Janet Miles, LRPS, CPAGP, BPE2, AFIAP, The Guild qualified
Photography is my passion. Looking at the world through a lens makes you see in a totally different way. It makes you stop and pay attention to the details that may otherwise pass you by. The natural world is all around, yet for many of us it is merely in the background. But stop a look at the details that nature creates or see how a landscape can change the way it shows itself in the blink of an eye and you start to see the true wonders of the world.
As you will see from my galleries, I like to photograph the natural world, although I also enjoy finding the abstract in the built world. I delight in the details that close up photography presents, and like to look for the 'personality' of plants and creatures. Living in Somerset, there is a wealth of beautiful scenery on the doorstep, but travelling also presents the opportunity to record a moment in perhaps a unique way.
In recent years, I have gained my Licentiateship with the Royal Photographic Society and have been awarded a Credit with the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. I have also achieved the two Crown award from the British Photographic Exhibitions (BPE2) and my AFIAP as a result of having numerous works accepted into national and international exhibitions, including winning gold medals in these. I regularly have my work published in national photographic, travel and lifestyle magazines and books. As an experienced teacher of many years, I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others and have worked with many individuals to help them develop their own photographic skills, both with their camera and with post processing. If you are interested in this, please get in touch via my contact page and we can discuss a personalised package for you. I have also spoken at camera clubs to share my experiences and work. Some comments from these sessions are below:
'Landscapes are not my favourite topic, so someone doing something a bit different was most welcome. I hope Janet enjoyed her visit - I'm sure we all did!'
'It gave us lots of food for thought and yes, I'll be joining the queue at the filters counter!'
'I thought the evening with Janet was informative and well presented. I definitely will be trying some moving water shots with the ND filter I have but have hardly used! '
'What an excellent speaker last night.I found it so interesting and helpful.'
'Janet Miles visited us to talk about the subject of creative shutter speeds. Janet uses creative shutter speeds in practically every subject she takes whether that be the waves at local Somerset beaches or on foreign shores, to the movement of the weather with clouds and lighting, even the stars above our heads. She has photographed people as they travel through the landscape as well as smoke and drips of water using a drip kit. She intentionally moves the camera horizontally and vertically.'
Whatever the subject all of Janet’s photographs they have a special essence about them and that was Janet, all had been created with care and thought. It is clearly not enough for her to focus her camera on the subject, freeze the moment and pass on, she has to put some of her thought into it, it is like she is stamping her mark on each location. A consequence of this is we are seeing something the human eye can not see, something only the camera can create and it is quite simply fascinating and very beautiful.' 'As a teacher, Janet is no stranger to speaking publically and delivers her message directly and simply. We only saw a small part of her extensive library of pictures and were left wanting more.'
'I’d recently started a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud and wanted to start using Lightroom quickly. Janet set up a training session for me to get to grips with handling a file from the camera through processing to print and storage. It was fantastic training, Janet talked through and demonstrated the steps with superb clarity dealing with my questions as the lesson progressed. She has a wealth of experience with the software and a thoroughly effective instructional technique. Soon I’ll book an introduction to Photoshop with Janet.' DM Webb MBE
